お盆になると、キュウリやナスとトウモロコシの髭で牛や馬を作り、お供え物と共に、濡らしたミソハギの水をかけて清め、お仏壇に供える。禊（みそぎ）をするための萩に似た花。「ミソギハギ」からミソハギになったようだ。
花屋などなかった昔は、お盆用の花として、ヒャクニチソウやグラジオラスなどと一緒に、庭の隅に植えられていた。野花でよく供えたのがキキョウやオミナエシ、提灯に見立てホウズキも供えた。どちらも迎え火や送り火をする風景と共に、あまり見かけなくなりました。そういえば最近盆踊りもやらなくなったなぁ。
核家族化が進むにつれて、古き良き風習や風情が消えてゆきます。
